On 30 September 2017, a small explosion occurred at the Embassy of Myanmar in Cairo. The explosion was initially reported as a possible gas explosion. No statement regarding the incident was released by Egypt’s Interior Ministry. Two security sources told Reuters that traces of explosives were found at the scene. The Egyptian militant group Hasm, claimed responsibility for the explosion and stated that care was taken not to injure civilians in the attack. Hasm, which means Arms of Egypt Movement, is blamed for several attacks targeting judges and police officers in Cairo over the past year. A spokesperson for the Government of Myanmar via Twitter urged Myanmar nationals living or traveling abroad to exercise caution. No further information was released.
