On 28 September 2017, members of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) Task Group Ranao discovered a cache of IEDs, unexploded ordnance, firearms, coins and other metal fragmentation during a clearing operation at the Bato Mosque in Marawi. The six bags of coins found in the cache are believed to be for IED enhancements. The Bato Mosque is a former Maute Group stronghold in Marawi. The Maute Group, also known as the Islamic State of Lanao, is a radical Islamist group engaged in fighting against AFP forces in Marawi. The operation, known as the “Battle of Marawi” or “Marawi Siege,” began on 23 May 2017.
