On 27 September 2017 at approximately 1745 hours local time, a man wearing a vest with exposed wires entered a bank in Hawthorne. At 1825 hours, the Hawthorne Police Department (HPD) responded and evacuated the building after the suspect refused to leave the bank at closing time. The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Arson and Explosives detail also responded. The LASD deployed a robot to monitor the suspect, who refused to communicate with the authorities throughout the standoff. Law enforcement shot tear gas into the bank and released a police working dog, which ended the standoff. The suspect was treated at a local hospital after his arrest.
