On 26 September 2017, Thai National Police (TNP) officers arrested a 36-year-old Polish man and charged him with blowing up a Bangkok Bank ATM in Prawet district, with what they described as a “balloon bomb.” On 13 September 2017 at approximately 0400 hours local time the ATM was targeted with an IED as part of a robbery. The IED consisted of a large exercise ball filled with hydrogen. The ball was set on fire; causing an explosion that gave the bomber access to the ATM. A total of 300,000 baht (approximately $9,000 USD) was stolen. The TNP utilized witness statements and surveillance footage to track the suspect to a road where they recovered a bag containing a number of items to include a crash helmet, clothes, a mask, a rubber exercise ball, a hose, 3,100 baht in cash, numerous pieces of adhesive tape and three packets of egg custard buns. The packets of buns led police to a nearby store where officers used additional surveillance footage to identify the suspect based on the clothing recovered. TNP officials believe the suspect acted alone.
