On 25 September 2017 at approximately 1600 hours local time, elements of the Royal Thai Army’s 11th Ranger Regiment discovered an improvised explosive device (IED), while patrolling the Sukhirin-Chanae road in Sukhirin district, Narathiwat Province. The device was described as a refrigerant cylinder that weighed approximately 20 kg (about 44 lbs.) with an electrical circuit. Explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) technicians from the 446 Thai Border Patrol Unit responded and rendered safe the device. Components from the device were turned over to forensics officers for exploitation. The Sukhirin Police Chief stated the device was likely cached near the road for later use by insurgents.
