On 19 September 2017, security personnel detained a 26-year-old man traveling to Dubai upon discovering a suspicious “clay-like” material in his cell phone power bank during x-ray baggage screening at Mangalore Airport. According to officials, the screener identified the suspicious item as “clay-like” and green colored in imaging scans, prompting a physical check of the item by the screener. The screener opened the power bank and found the material. Canine units responded and officers conducted an explosive trace detection test. Police later stated that the item was a self-made power bank and was not an explosive device. The item and passenger were allowed to proceed. Local media speculated the device was a “dry run” by a “terrorist sales rep.”
