On 17 September 2017 at approximately 1030 hours local time, the Tubac Fire Department (TFD) responded to a report of an explosion in a vacant building in Amado. The explosion injured a local man who received treatment at an area hospital. Hospital staff contacted authorities after noticing “penetrating injuries” to the man’s chest and knee, consistent with gunshots or an explosion. Upon further investigation, Santa Cruz County Sheriff’s Office (SCCSO) deputies discovered gunpowder at the injured man’s residence and alerted the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) and the FBI. ATF and FBI took over the now ongoing investigation. No further details were released.
