On 5 October 2018 at approximately 2240 hours local time, deputies from the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) responded to an explosion and subsequent fire in a mailbox at a subdivision near the outskirt of Shoshone. Agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) were called in to the scene to investigate. The Lincoln County Sheriff stated that an improvised explosive device (IED) destroyed the mailbox. He added that this was the second mailbox explosion in the area in less than three months. The earlier explosion was reported on July 11 in a residential area in Shoshone. No details on the type of device or detonator were released. The investigation is ongoing to determine whether the incidents are related.
