North Carolina: Explosives Emplaced at Fire Department; BMM Discovered During Investigation

TRIPwire, 13 August 2019

On 11 August 2019 at approximately 1400 hours local time, an individual left explosive devices at the door of the Dudley Volunteer Fire Department. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene and notified the Explosive Ordnance Disposal flight from Seymour Johnson Air Force Base and the North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Bomb Squad. Investigators confirmed the explosive nature of the devices and used a robot to move the items away from the station. On 12 August, investigators searched the residence of the individual who transported the devices to the fire department and identified items that could be used to manufacture explosive devices, requiring some material to be rendered safe onsite. This search led to the arrest of two suspects, a 39-year-old woman and 36-year-old man. Investigators subsequently searched a residence one of the suspects was thought to have visited and located items consistent with the bomb-making materials (BMM) discovered at the first residence.
