United Kingdom: IIDs Target Law Enforcement During Security Operation
TRIPwire, 10 September 2019
On 9 September 2019, the Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) discovered an IED in a vehicle during a major security operation in the Creggan area of Derry. The Army Bomb Disposal Team rendered safe the command wire-initiated IED intended to be used against a Creggan-area police patrol. A crowd of 60 to 100 onlookers gathered during the operation and some attacked police vehicles with over 40 improvised incendiary devices (IIDs). At least 2 people sustained burn injuries while trying to attack the police cordon, but no officers were injured. The police operation involved approximately 80 officers targeting the New IRA after an improvised mortar was discovered in Strabane on 7 September.
