Philippines: Military Thwarts PBIED Attack
TRIPwire, 6 November 2019
On 6 November 2019, soldiers at a military checkpoint disrupted an attempted person-borne IED (PBIED) attack by Abu-Sayyaf insurgents. Three men attempted to get through the checkpoint on a motorcycle, but were killed by the soldiers. Authorities found multiple PBIEDs, a handgun, a grenade, and detonators with the men. Two of the insurgents were Egyptian, while one was a known Filipino member of Abu-Sayyaf. According to media reports, if the insurgents had succeeded, the attack would have been the fifth PBIED attack in the Philippines in 16 months.
