Thailand: IED Used in Coordinated Attack, Killing 15
TRIPwire, 6 November 2019
On 5 November 2019, insurgents launched a coordinated attack against local village defense volunteers near the city of Yala in southern Thailand. During the attack, an IED was detonated near an electrical pole to knock out power to the area, and nails were scattered on a highway to disable vehicles and delay law enforcement response. The insurgents killed 15 security personnel including a police officer, wounded five others in the attack, and stole weapons from a checkpoint. According to local media sources, this was the deadliest attack by the insurgents in 15 years. No group claimed responsibility for the attack, though a large network of separatist insurgents are active in southern Thailand.
