TRIPwire, 11 December 2019

On 11 December 2019, two vehicle-borne IEDs (VBIEDs) targeted a new medical facility under construction at Bagram Airbase. After the VBIEDs functioned, attackers engaged security forces in a gun battle lasting approximately 30 minutes. There are conflicting reports regarding the number of casualties; however, most sources are confirming 2 dead and at least 70 injured. No U.S. or coalition forces were wounded in the attack. In addition to the medical facility, a number of civilian houses were destroyed in the attack. U.S. forces conducted airstrikes on the medical facility after the remaining attackers barricaded themselves inside. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Base representatives stated that the fighting was contained to the medical facility and the base was not in danger, adding that at no time during the attack was the base’s perimeter breached or compromised.
