New Jersey: Device Discovered at Scene of Deadly Shootout
TRIPwire, 11 December 2019
On 10 December 2019 at approximately 1200 hours local time, a male and female suspect shot and killed a detective from the Jersey City Police Department as he approached them at a cemetery in the Greenville neighborhood of Jersey City. The suspects fled the scene in a stolen rental truck linked to a previous homicide investigation and drove to a kosher market located one mile away. The suspects fired their weapons into the market, then entered and barricaded themselves inside. When law enforcement arrived at the market, they were engaged by high-powered gunfire. A four-hour standoff and shootout ensued, with the Jersey City Police Department, New York City Police Department Special Operations Bureau, SWAT, FBI, and ATF responding to the scene. At the end of the shootout, two officers had sustained injuries, and three civilians and the two suspects were found dead inside the market. Investigators believe the suspects were responsible for killing the civilians. In the stolen vehicle, police discovered a manifesto-style note with religious writing and a device, although reports conflict on whether it was a pipe bomb or an improvised incendiary device. The Jersey City Police Bomb Squad removed the device and vehicle for further examination. Based on CCTV footage and online anti-Semitic and anti-police posts by one of the suspects, authorities believe the suspects specifically targeted the kosher market for the attack. The incident is being investigated as a case of domestic terrorism.
