Florida: ATM Explosion Marks Third Incident Since November 2019

TRIPwire, 13 January 2020

On 12 January 2020, the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office responded to reports of an ATM explosion in Valrico. Sometime between the evening of 11 January and the morning of 12 January, an unidentified suspect spray-painted the lenses of surveillance cameras in the area before detonating the drive-thru ATM. No injuries were reported, and authorities have not confirmed how much money was stolen. An employee of a nearby business told the local news the ATM had been filled a few days prior to the incident. Officials with the FBI and ATF also responded to the scene to assist with the investigation. This is the third ATM explosion in the area in the last two months. It remains unclear if this incident is related to the two previous explosions, but the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office and Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office are working together to identify any potential connections. The investigation is ongoing.
