Netherlands: 2 Package IEDs Delivered to Companies Function

TRIPwire, 12 February 2020

On 12 February 2020 at approximately 0800 and 0855 hours local time, two IEDs concealed in packages functioned in Amsterdam and Kerkrade, respectively. The Amsterdam incident occurred in the mail room of a company in the Sloterdijk area while the Kerkrade blast occurred at a postal company approximately 20 minutes after police received reports of a suspicious item in the facility. Amsterdam and Limburg police reported that there were no injuries. Witnesses at the scene reported hearing a hissing sound from the package before the detonation. The Defense ministry's explosives ordnance disposal unit responded to conduct further investigations. Authorities are investigating whether the two incidents are connected and if they are linked to a series of package IEDs distributed in late December 2019 and early January 2020. In prior incidents, an unknown perpetrator sent package IEDs to seven businesses in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, Utrecht, and Maastricht followed by a threatening letter designed to originate from a central collections agency. Dutch police are aware of 10 threatening letters and six packages containing explosives. None of the previously sent devices functioned with the last reported incident occurring 10 January. An investigation is ongoing.
