Ecuador: Journalist Targeted in IED Attack

TRIPwire, 13 February 2020

On 8 February 2020 at approximately 0400 hours local time, an IED detonated at the home of a politics journalist in Naranjal. The journalist and his pregnant wife were home at the time of the attack, but no injuries were reported. The explosion damaged a refrigerator and left a hole in the garage floor. According to the journalist, the device was connected to a gallon-size container of gasoline that did not explode. The man, who was threatened in October 2019 while covering a story about Naranjal’s mayor and anti-government protesters, suspects he was targeted due to his work. The investigation is ongoing.
