TRIPwire, 24 March 2020

On 21 March 2020, the Oconee County Sheriff’s Office and Jackson County Sheriff’s Office responded to an explosion at a bank ATM in Watkinsville. Two suspects detonated an IED on the ATM in an attempt to access the money inside. The ATM was destroyed by the explosion, but the safe in the ATM was not breached and no cash was taken. Police arrested the two suspects, a 33-year-old male and 34-year-old male, as they fled the scene. Authorities believe the suspects are also responsible for a series of ATM attacks in the Tampa, Florida, area between November 2019 and January 2020, in which at least $70,000 was stolen. Both men were charged with first degree arson, manufacture of an explosive device, second degree criminal damage to property, and conspiracy to commit a felony. The FBI, ATF, and numerous local law enforcement agencies are assisting with the investigation.
