Maryland: IID Found at Church Arson Incident

On 26 June 2020 at approximately 0827 hours local time, Taneytown Police Department (TPD) officers and Taneytown Volunteer Fire Company crews responded to a fire at a church and quickly extinguished the blaze. TPD officers detained a 47-year-old male at the scene after he confessed to starting the fire. Deputy State Fire Marshals investigating the fire discovered an improvised incendiary device (IID) described as a Molotov cocktail in the church’s vestibule and confirmed the incident was arson. No injuries were reported, and the church sustained approximately $10,000 in damages. The suspect currently faces several arson-related charges.
