California: IED Discovered in Stolen Vehicle

On 26 June 2020 at approximately 0730 hours local time, officers from the Bakersfield Police Department (BPD) responded to a report of a 16-year-old male suspect with a firearm and a stolen vehicle in a residential area. Police found the suspect at the scene in possession of a stolen truck, stolen motorcycle, and a BB gun. Police searched the vehicle and discovered what appeared to be an explosive device. The BPD Bomb Squad responded to examine the device and determined it was an IED. The device contained gunpowder and ball bearings for fragmentation. Bomb squad technicians rendered the device safe at the scene. Police arrested the juvenile suspect, who faces charges of possession of a stolen vehicle and possession of a destructive device.
