Oregon: IIDs, Pyrotechnics Function during Protests

TRIPwire, 4 January 2021

On 31 December 2020, at approximately 1945 hours local time, Portland Police Bureau (PPB) officers responded after a group of protestors near the Federal Courthouse and Multnomah County Justice Center threw improvised incendiary devices (IIDs), described as Molotov cocktails, and other projectiles at law enforcement officers and launched commercial-grade aerial pyrotechnics at the courthouse. The PPB declared a riot shortly before midnight and deployed inert smoke and some impact munitions to disperse the crowd. Several local businesses were damaged during the unrest, and an unknown number of law enforcement officers were injured. Three people were arrested in connection with the events. The investigation is ongoing.
