Somalia: VBIED Targets Security Convoy, 8 Killed

On 12 January 2022, a vehicle-borne IED (VBIED) targeted a multi-vehicle private security convoy escorting foreigners in Mogadishu, killing at least eight. According to authorities, casualties could be higher because of the number of people in the area. The VBIED explosion destroyed most of the buildings nearby and vehicles in the vicinity. No additional details on the VBIED have been released. Al-Shabaab claimed responsibility for the attack and stated it was targeting “foreign officers.” The investigation is ongoing.
