South Africa: Smuggled Explosives Discovered at Border, 3 Arrested

On 13 January 2022, at approximately 0100 hours local time, local authorities arrested a woman and two men at the Beitbridge Border Post in Limpopo attempting to smuggle commercial explosives from Zimbabwe into South Africa. The Musina Explosives Unit responded to assist. Bomb technicians examined the suspect’s bags and found 6 reels of detonating cord, 50 units of “connector capped fuses,” and 65 explosive charges. Authorities stated that the explosives found were similar to those used in recent ATM attacks. The suspects are facing charges of unlawful possession and smuggling of explosives.
