South Africa: Explosive Device Used to Target ATM

On 13 May 2022, at approximately 0203 hours local time, a South African Police Service (SAPS) officer responded after suspects used an explosive device to target an ATM in Metsimaholo before fleeing with an unknown amount of cash. A preliminary investigation suggests that the suspects used a commercial explosive in the attack, but no further device details have been released. SAPS officers identified a suspicious vehicle, stopped it between Phomolong and Refengkgotso, and arrested three suspects in connection to the ATM attack. Officers also raided a safe house in Garankuwa and arrested five additional suspects in connection to the ATM attack. Authorities found explosives, cash, and a firearm at the safe house. The investigation is ongoing.
