On 12 May 2022, German police reported that during a search of an Essen apartment, due to suspicion that a 16-year-old male resident was planning an attack on his current school or former school, they discovered bomb-making material (BMM) including explosives that had been mixed and 16 tube-shaped containers. According to police, they did not find a viable device in the apartment, but some of the tube-shaped containers had nails attached for fragmentation while others had timers connected to them. Authorities also recovered a homemade firearm, crossbow with arrows, and spears. The suspect was arrested, and the investigation is ongoing.
