TRIPwire, 25 May 2022

On 6 April 2022, the Springfield Police Department (SPD) and the Vermont State Police were executing a search warrant at a Springfield home and found a 10.5 inch pipe bomb in the residence. An ATF special agent bomb technician responded to the scene and examined the device which was described as an aluminum pipe with crimped metal ends, covered in tape, with a pyrotechnic fuse and filled with black powder and 650 BBs for fragmentation. The 33-year-old male suspect told authorities that he had obtained the materials for the device from hardware stores, assembled it using instructions from the internet, and that he had functioned several similar devices in bodies of water in Rhode Island. The suspect was arrested and charged with unlawful possession of a destructive device.
