California: IEDs Discovered in Car and Residence, 3 Arrested

On 18 June 2022, San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department (SBSD) deputies conducted a routine traffic stop on a vehicle at an intersection in Yucca Valley and discovered an IED and black powder in the vehicle. No further device details have been released. The SBSD bomb and arson division responded to assist and removed the IED for offsite disposal. The 46-year-old driver and the 50-year-old passenger in the vehicle were arrested on suspicion of possession of an explosive device and possession of a controlled substance while armed. SBSD deputies conducted a subsequent search at a residence belonging to the suspects in Johnson Valley and discovered “military-grade explosives,” ammunition, and firearms and arrested a 54-year-old female present at the scene. SBSD bomb and arson division removed the explosives for offsite disposal. The investigation is ongoing.
