Thailand: VBIED Functioned Near Police Checkpoint

On 20 June 2022, at approximately 2000 hours local time, Officers from Panare Police Station responded after several unidentified gunmen hijacked a garbage truck, emplaced 50 kg [~110 lb] of explosives inside and drove the vehicle to a petrol station in front of a Chantharak police checkpoint in Pattani before detonating the explosives and fleeing the scene. No additional details on the construction of the vehicle-borne IED (VBIED) has been released. The blast injured one police officer and damaged the police checkpoint booth, a commercial building, the gas station, and surrounding residences. No group has claimed responsibility for the attack, but police suspect that an insurgent group may be responsible.
