On 20 September 2022, at approximately 1130 hours local time, Baltimore County Police Department (BCPD) officers responded to Pine Grove Middle School following reports of a suspicious device inside a vehicle parked near the school’s entrance. BCPD’s Hazardous Devices Team responded to assist and rendered the device safe, which was described as consisting of cardboard, a toy car receiver, and a homemade explosive mixture. The device’s initiation system included two wires and a small wrapping of match heads. According to court documents, the device could have been initiated by a remote control. A male suspect was identified and a subsequent search of his vehicle and hotel room uncovered bomb-making material (BMM) to include fertilizer, a table-top stove, tubing, a remote-controlled car, medical cold packs with ammonium nitrate removed, and two propane cylinders. The male suspect was arrested and charged with possession of an explosive or incendiary device with intent to create a destructive device, among other drug-related charges. A second female suspect was arrested and is facing drug-related charges.
