On 28 September 2022, at approximately 1817 hours local time, San Diego County Sheriff's Department deputies, the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department’s (SDFD) HAZMAT team, and FBI bomb technicians responded to the University of California-San Diego after a bottle containing an explosive liquid was found in a lab. Authorities determined that the bottle contained between 10 and 20 ml of diethyl ether, which is highly volatile and shock sensitive. Bomb technicians removed the bottle from the lab and conducted a controlled detonation on site. The investigation is ongoing.
