TRIPwire, 13 October 2022

On 11 October 2022, National Gendarmerie Intervention Group (GIGN) forces arrested a 46-year-old male as part of an investigation after the suspect purchased bomb-making material (BMM) online, including potassium nitrate. Authorities searched his residence in Carnas and discovered 40 IEDs. Some of the IEDs were described as “booby traps” that are very dangerous and contained steel balls. Some IEDs worked with a fuse and others could be triggered by a mechanical ignition system, either with fishing line (tripwire) or from the house alarm system used to activate the traps through motion detectors. In addition to the IEDs and BMM, handguns, iodine tablets, and surveillance cameras were discovered around the suspect’s residence. The investigation is ongoing.
