On 14 October 2022, at approximately 0100 hours local time, a Shirley Police Department officer discovered a suspicious item, described as a paint can with a wick sticking out, while on patrol on Townsend Road. The Massachusetts State Police Bomb Squad responded to assist, deployed a robot to X-ray the item, and determined it was a pyrotechnic-type explosive device. No further device details have been released. Bomb squad technicians conducted render safe procedures and removed the device for further analysis. The incident remains under investigation.
