On 5 February 2023, Astoria Police Department (APD) officers responded to a warming center located in a church on Franklin Avenue and recovered an IED, described as a shotgun shell in a plastic container wrapped in tape with a sharp pointed end that utilized a spring as a detonator, which was reportedly thrown at a center employee following a previous altercation. On 3 February, at approximately 2115 hours, APD officers responded to the center after a 58-year-old male suspect threw the IED at an employee and stabbed another employee, before being arrested. APD officers later learned that a staff member with military experience had rendered the IED safe before placing it in a drawer. The suspect was charged with attempted assault in the first degree, attempted murder in the second degree, and unlawful possession of a destructive device.
