On 14 March 2023, at approximately 0130 hours local time, local police responded after three suspects used explosives to attack an ATM at a supermarket in Rheingönheim, Ludwigshafen, before fleeing the scene. Witnesses reported hearing two explosions, which destroyed the ATM and caused significant damage to the building. No injuries were reported. Local explosives experts responded to assist and conducted a post-blast analysis of the scene where they found a small amount of explosives and disposed of them by a controlled detonation on scene. No further details on the explosives have been released, and it is unclear how much money was stolen. Two suspects were arrested a few hours after the crime, but authorities are still searching for the third. The investigation is ongoing.
