On 27 February 2021, at approximately 1617 hours local time, Old Saybrook Police Department officers responded after a 37-year-old male suspect ignited an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, inside an emergency medical services (EMS) station in Old Saybrook. The suspect then drove to a second EMS station in Meriden and threw a second IID at the exterior of the station about 40 minutes later, prompting Meriden Police Department officers to respond. Connecticut State Police Fire and Explosion Unit and Office of the State Fire Marshal investigators responded to assist and determined that the suspect was connected to two additional arson incidents that had occurred within two hours of the IID incidents—one targeting the Roxbury Fire Department, the other the suspect’s childhood home in Roxbury. Authorities have not disclosed if the suspect used IIDs to ignite the two fires in Roxbury, but an ambulance and the fire station building sustained significant smoke damage. Investigators believe the suspect was a disgruntled former employee at the EMS station in Meriden. The suspect fled the state and was apprehended in Pennsylvania by Pennsylvania State Police troopers. FBI and ATF personnel are assisting with the investigation, and the suspect is awaiting extradition back to Connecticut.
