According to media reporting from 6 September 2021, on 5 May 2021, at approximately 2215 hours local time, a 24-year-old man in the Lillington suburb of Leamington Spa in Warwickshire, England, made a 999 call and reported that he had caused a fire in his home while attempting to make an explosive device. Local fire crews responded, discovered a fire in the kitchen of the home, and extinguished it. A investigation discovered that the suspect had created a social media video in which he placed aerosol cans and a metal colander in a microwave, claimed he was “building a baby bomb,” and said “I hope it explodes soon or I’ll be disappointed.” Fire investigators also found a second microwave in the garden connected to an outlet in the kitchen that contained burned firelighters. According to the investigation, after the fire started in the kitchen, the suspect knocked on the door of his roommate’s bedroom but failed to inform him of what had happened. When fire investigators arrived on the scene, they determined that the suspect smelled of alcohol and had a knife in his possession. The suspect was arrested and pleaded guilty to arson, being reckless as to whether life was endangered, and possession of a bladed article, and received three and a half years in prison.
