Florida: Child Pornography Raid Results in Explosive Device Discovery

On 18 October 2017, Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office (PCSO) deputies discovered multiple explosives, incendiary devices and firearms, while executing a search warrant in Dunedin. The suspect was under investigation for the possession and distribution of child pornography. In addition to the discovered explosive devices, which were described as tubes filled with gunpowder with protruding wicks, investigators discovered aerial photographs of two local schools and a water treatment facility. Sheriff’s deputies seized 20 firearms, 15 knives, a baseball bat with nails and a crossbow. The suspect was arrested and charged with two counts of unlawfully making, possessing or attempting to make a destructive device. He was released on $20,000 bond and taken to a mental health facility.

Virginia: Police Investigating IED Explosion

On 19 October 2017 at approximately 1700 hours local time, the Williamsburg police and fire departments responded to reports of a vehicle fire in a parking lot in Williamsburg. Once on scene, authorities determined the fire was the result of an improvised explosive device (IED) detonation. No one was injured. Multiple state and federal law enforcement agencies are assisting Williamsburg authorities in the investigation, including the Newport News Police Department, Virginia State Police, the ATF and FBI.

Sweden: Vehicle Booby-Trap Rendered Safe

Ireland: Second IED Rendered Safe in Two Days

On 18 October 2017 at 0900 hours local time, an improvised explosive device (IED) was discovered by a pedestrian near a home in Rathkeale. Authorities evacuated nearby homes and cordoned off the area, until an Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team from the Defense Forces of Ireland (DFI) arrived. The EOD team moved the device to a safer location for further examination. A DFI statement indicated any “items of an evidentiary nature” would be turned over to police to assist in the now ongoing investigation. This is the second time in as many days that the EOD team traveled to Limerick to investigate a suspicious device. Mexico: 11 Dead in Northern Mexico Firefights, Grenades Recovered

Security forces responding to criminal blockades in the area were engaged with automatic small-arms fire by armed individuals near a gas station. Conflicting casualty figures were reported with between eight and eleven fatalities. Morocco: Dismantled Moroccan ISIS Cell Possessed Bomb-Making Materials

On 14 October 2017, members of the Moroccan Central Bureau of Judicial Investigations (BCIJ) arrested 11 suspected members of an Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham (ISIS) terrorist cell in Fez, Morocco. According to BCIJ they confiscated a number of suspicious items, including firearms, ammunition, butane gas bottles, two belts for making suicide bombs, fire extinguishers, fertilizers, unspecified liquids, a thermometer, a metal tube for making explosives and bomb-making instructions. The suspects were planning to fill the fire extinguishers with explosives and shrapnel. The BCIJ determined that the suspects planned to attack targets across the country. The station suffered broken windows and considerable structural damage. No casualties were reported. No suspects were arrested and authorities believed that the incident may be attributed to criminal gang activity in the area. Explosives are often used by criminal gangs in Sweden, particularly in southern Sweden, where score settling and intimidation tactics are frequently used by drug traffickers. An investigation is ongoing.
