On 16 August 2017, a home in Alcanar, exploded, killing one person and wounding seven others. A second explosion took place around 1700 local time, as first responders investigated the scene. This explosion injured an additional nine people, including six police officers and two firefighters. At least 20 butane and propane canisters were found at the scene of the explosion. Police originally believed the incident was caused by a gas leak and that the home was possibly being used as an illicit drug laboratory. However, following the Barcelona vehicle ramming attack on 17 August, police determined that a terrorist cell was possibly using the house to construct an explosive device. The cause of the explosion is currently unknown.

On 16 August, 2017, a residence in Alcanar sustained what authorities now assess to be a premature detonation of explosive materials. Fire investigators originally believed that the cause of the explosion was accidental and related to 20 compressed gas cylinders stored in the home. However, further investigation revealed a cache of approximately 120 gas cylinders and traces of high explosives. Homemade explosive triacetone triperoxide (TATP) were recovered from the scene. TATP is a highly volatile high explosive that is sensitive to shock and friction, and was recently used in three other high profile European terror attacks linked to ISIS in Paris, Brussels and Manchester.
The original casualty figures were updated to two occupants of the residence that were killed, a third severely injured and 15 other civilians injured. One of those killed in Wednesday’s explosion in Alcanar is believed to be a former imam, Abdelbaki es Satty, who is the alleged organizer of the group.

On 20 August 2017, the Lebanese interior minister released more details on the unsuccessful 15 July 2017 attempt to bring an IED onto a flight from Sydney to Abu Dhabi. According to the minister, there were two devices that the suspects attempted to emplace onto the plane in the checked luggage, which failed to make it onboard the flight due to weight restrictions. The devices were reportedly concealed in a meat grinder and a child’s doll. Four brothers are believed to be involved in the attack: Amer Khayyat, the passenger on the flight who was apprehended in Lebanon; Khaled Khayyat and Mahmoud Khayyat, who were detained in Australia; and Tarek Khayyat, who Lebanese authorities identified as a member of ISIS living in Syria. Amer was initially reported as an unwitting transporter of the devices, but is now listed as a primary suspect suspect, intending to initiate the device twenty minutes into the flight.
