On 4 November 2021, a 25-year-old suspect was arrested by local Swedish authorities at a farm outside Falköping in Västra Götaland County, where they discovered an explosives lab containing bomb-making material (BMM) which included gunpowder and 50 tons [~110,231 lb] of fertilizer, right-wing extremist literature, and books describing how to make explosive devices. Authorities believe the suspect used the various BMM to make devices. The suspect is linked to the Neo-Nazi organization, Nordic Resistance Movement (NMR) and is said to have been planning an attack for over a year, searching for posts and discussion threads about explosions and proposals for attacks on schools conducted by “lone wolves.” Authorities also found lists of orders and purchases of weapons, protective equipment, chemicals, and explosives, along with weapons made with a 3D printer. The suspect is charged with general destruction, aggravated weapon crime, preparation for a serious gun crime, gun crime, and violation of the law on flammable, and explosive goods.

On 2 May 2022, a LaGrange Police Department (LPD) officer conducted a traffic stop on a car and discovered a black plastic case containing two pipe bombs in the trunk of the car. One of the devices was described as a galvanized steel pipe with two end caps and a green fuse extending from one of the end caps, and the second device was described as a heavily taped cylindrical object with plastic zip ties and another green fuse. A Fort Wayne Police Department (FWPD) bomb squad technician responded to the scene to assist and determined that one of the devices was filled with pistol ammunition and BBs. The LPD also found two 12-gauge shotguns, shotgun shells, ammunition for a .40-caliber pistol, shooting targets, and narcotics in the vehicle. The LPD arrested the 36-year-old male driver of the car, and his passenger, and transported them both to LaGrange County Jail. Subsequently, agents from the ATF, and officers from the LPD, FWPD, and the Elkhart Police Department searched the suspect’s home in Milford and discovered additional bomb-making materials (BMM) to include exploding target material, smokeless powder, green fuse, and pre-tied zip ties. The 36-year-old suspect was charged with being a felon in possession of a firearm, possessing a firearm while using a controlled substance, and unlawful possession of a bomb.

On 23 May 2022, at approximately 1530 hours local time, the Spokane County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO) deputies responded to the area in South Spokane for reports of an intoxicated man threatening to throw an improvised incendiary device (IID) at cars and people while trying to light his car on fire. SCSO deputies arrested the suspect, searched his car, and found additional IIDs. Photos released by SCSO showed a soda bottle with a wick, an oil bottle with a blue paper wick, and a red can near the man’s car. SCSO stated that the 39-year-old man tried to function the devices but was unsuccessful. The suspect was arrested on two counts of possession of an incendiary device.

On 26 May 2022, at approximately 1215 hours local time, officers from the South Cotabato Police Provision Officer responded after an IED emplaced in the rear of a bus in Koronadal City, South Cotabato, functioned injuring two people following behind the bus on a motorized tricycle. One of the injured was transported to a local hospital for treatment; none of the six people on the bus were injured. At 1245 hours, another explosive device functioned near a restaurant in Tacuroung City, approximately 35km [~21 miles] away from the first incident. No one was injured in the second incident. No one has taken responsibility for either incident, but authorities believe that militants linked to ISIS may have conducted the attacks in retaliation for recent military action against the group. The investigation is ongoing.

On 17 May 2022, at approximately 1222 hours local time, Haywood County Sheriff’s Department (HCSD) deputies responded to a rural residence and discovered two pipe bombs in the residence. No further device details have been released. HCSD deputies arrested the suspect, identified as 36-year-old Stanton resident. Federal investigators are assisting in the ongoing investigation.

On 23 May 2022, Tacoma Police Department (TPD) officers and the TPD Explosives Ordnance Disposal (EOD) unit responded to two separate incidents. The first at a High School after an IED, that was described as pyrotechnics made into an IED, was discovered in the parking lot. No further device details have been released. The second incident took place on E. 72nd Street after a pipe bomb was discovered in a parking lot. Authorities did not provide further device details but a picture released by TPD shows a black cylindrical pipe with two red end caps placed on a parking sign pole. TPD EOD conducted render safe procedures on both devices. No injuries were reported in either incident and the investigation is ongoing.

On 26 May 2022, at approximately 0230 hours local time, the Gamprin fire brigade responded after unknown suspects used an explosive device to target an ATM near the community center in Gamprin, close to the Swiss border, and fled the scene with an undisclosed amount of money. No further device details have been released. The explosion caused extensive damage, but no injuries were reported. State police forensic experts and Zurich Forensic Institute technicians responded to the scene to collect evidence for further analysis. The state police, the cantonal police of St. Gallen, the Federal Office for Customs and Border Security, and the Vorarlberg police are assisting in the ongoing investigation.

On 25 May 2022, at approximately 2130 hours local time, six suspected insurgents on motorcycles threw three IEDs and opened fire with automatic rifles at Tak Bai Police Station in Tambom Jeh He of Tak Bai district, near the Thai-Malay border, setting the police station on fire. No further device details have been released. The attack injured two defense volunteers and a soldier and caused damage to nearby cars. According to local source, the victims were injured by fragmentation, and were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack. This investigation is ongoing.

On 19 May 2022, the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO) and BCSO Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) technicians responded to a home on Merritt Island after a receiving a 911 call that a suspect had functioned an IED in a mailbox. EOD technicians reported that the device was “not put together hastily,” and no further device details were released. The explosion destroyed the mailbox and sent fragmentation approximately 50 feet away. According to the BCSO, the suspect had functioned the device because he was angry over a debt he believed was owed to him for landscaping services. On 20 May, the 29-year-old male suspect was arrested and charged with making or possessing a destructive device, possession of a destructive device to cause bodily harm, and aggravated assault, among other charges.
