Ohio: 30 Homes Evacuated after Large Amount of Explosives Discovered

On 22 November 2017, 30 homes were evacuated after police recovered 39 sticks of dynamite from a freezer in an abandoned home in Alliance. Police were led to the home after seizing an illegal weapon at a nearby residence. After recovering the illegal weapon, a loaded shotgun with the barrel and stock cut and sawed off, police went to the vacant home; which belonged to the family of the owner of the illegal weapon. Upon discovering dynamite, police evacuated approximately 30 nearby homes for two and half hours. The Summit County Bomb Disposal Unit responded, removed the dynamite, and disposed of it on their range. Police arrested a suspect and charged him with one count of having weapons under disability, two counts of possessing dangerous ordinance, and one count of inducing panic.

The arrest was the result of an investigation into threats made by the student regarding suicide and a desire to commit a mass shooting or bombing. Siloam Springs Police Department officers in conjunction with University Campus Safety officers responded to the student’s dorm room following the discovery of a suicide note that was posted in a common area. The note referenced the student’s desire to commit a mass shooting or bombing. Police found an AK-47, a 9mm carbine, and ammunition in the student’s dorm room. Witness interviews indicated the suspect was constructing and detonating explosive devices at an undisclosed location off campus. The suspect admitted to these accusations during interviews, according to police. The suspect was charged with committing Criminal Acts Involving Explosives. The investigation is ongoing.

On 24 November 2017, approximately 25 to 30 armed gunmen wearing military uniforms carried out an assault on the al Rawdah Sufi mosque in Bir al-Abed in the Northern Sinai. The attack killed 305 people and injured 128 others. The attackers initially detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) at the end of prayers and used automatic weapons to shoot at worshipers fleeing the mosque. The gunmen also set parked vehicles on fire to block roads and hamper rescue efforts. There are no reports as to the type of explosive device used in the attack. According to witnesses, the gunmen were carrying an Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham (ISIS) flag and fired on first responder vehicles that arrived. No group claimed responsibility for the attack. The Wilayat Sinai group, which pledged allegiance to ISIS in 2014, is responsible for numerous attacks and hundreds of deaths in the Sinai region in recent years.

The device was discovered by security personnel at the Charwazgai checkpoint in Tehsil Landikotal. The journalists were travelling to a “vintage car rally” in the area. The device weighed approximately two kilograms and may be locally manufactured, according to security officials. The Walnut Creek Police Department Bomb Squad responded and rendered safe the device. A Fire Department spokesman stated that there would be an investigation into the device but was unsure which agency would be responsible.
