On 17 November 2017, a suspicious device described as a box, wrapped in electrical tape and exposed wiring, was discovered in a restroom at Polk County High School. Students and faculty were evacuated and classes were canceled for the day. Bomb technicians from Chattanooga and Cleveland responded to the incident and determined that the device was a hoax. A search of the school for additional hazards was then conducted with assistance from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office. No additional hazards were found. On 19-21 November 2017, multiple IED incidents directed towards political targets were reported throughout Nepal. On 19 November 2017, Nepalese Army Bomb Squad teams responded to a socket bomb discovered outside of a District Election Office in Dhading and an unknown IED at the residence of an elected official in Baglung. Additionally, an IED was thrown at the vehicle of an official traveling through Dhading on his way to deliver a speech in Bahundanda, which did not result in any casualties or damage. On 21 November 2017, a second socket bomb was found and cleared by an Army EOD team near a fuel pump along Gajuri-Malekhu road in Gajuri. Socket bombs are typically small, hand-thrown, impact detonated devices fashioned from commercial plumbing materials, and filled with a black powder or a similar main charge. These devices are traditionally utilized for harassment and intimidation during elections in the Asia-Pacific region.

On 20 November 2017, Lubbock Police stated that a man robbed a bank with a pipe bomb in Lubbock. At 1500 hours local time, police received a call from the bank that a suspicious package was left on its premises following a robbery. At approximately 1630 hours local time, Lubbock Regional Bomb Squad technicians removed the suspected pipe bomb from the bank, transported it in a total containment vessel (TCV) to the Lubbock Police Academy and exploited the device at the academy’s bomb range. The suspect stole an undisclosed amount of money and no one was injured. Police were notified of the robbery 30 minutes after a suspicious package was reported in a Texas Tech University (TTU) parking lot. Police do not know if the two incidents are connected. On 21 November 2017, a male suspect will face charges related to two explosions in the Fall Creek neighborhood of Indianapolis. The separate explosions targeted a vehicle and a home. The suspect is accused of detonating an explosive device in his former landlord’s vehicle on 1 November 2017 and placing another device outside a nearby residence on 10 November 2017. The second device detonated, while the Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department Bomb Squad attempted to render it safe, shattering windows in nearby buildings. Police searching one of the suspect’s prior residences found unspecified bomb-making materials.

On 16 November 2017 at 1816 hours local time, a pipe bomb emplaced in the grill of a vehicle in Blackstone detonated, causing damage to the vehicle. There were no injuries. A Blackstone Police Department (BPD) spokesman stated that the attack targeted the principle of Bellingham High School, but did not suggest a motive. BPD increased its presence at the school on 17 November. Massachusetts State Police bomb technicians and ATF agents are assisting with the investigation.

Kingsport Police Department Bomb Squad technicians removed and then disrupted the device but did not state whether the device was viable.

On 16 November 2017 at approximately 1700 local time, the Gardai (Irish police) were alerted to a suspicious device discovered at a ballet school in Kilmeaney, County Carlow. Irish Army EOD technicians responded and rendered safe a “complex, viable improvised device” at 1800 local time. Police are reporting that the device was inside a package inadvertently brought to the location and believe the school was not being targeted. Bomb disposal technicians took the remains of the device to a military location for examination.
