On 21 August 2017 at 2342 local time, officers from the North Newton Police Department (NNPD) discovered explosives in a vehicle during a routine traffic stop in North Newton. Two cylindrical objects were discovered during the vehicle search, which prompted the NNPD officers to request assistance from the Wichita Bomb Squad (WBS). Bomb technicians rendered safe both devices before the evidence was turned over to the ATF. The two devices were described as containing multiple components and that explosives were present. The suspect was arrested charges are pending for criminal possession of explosives.

One survivor of the house explosion that took place on 16 August 2017 in the town of Alcanar informed a court in Madrid that the plotters intended to target Spanish monuments with large, vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices and intended to blow themselves up in the attacks. One of the targets mentioned by the alleged plotter was the unfinished Sagrada Familia Roman Catholic church in Barcelona. On 20 August 2017 at approximately 0813 local time, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), along with the Unified Fire Authority’s (UFA) bomb squad, responded to a hazardous device in Park City. The device was described as a tube about five inches long and 2 inches in diameter. Two spray-paint can caps were connected by electrical tape to the cylinder. The device contained a paper towel, soaked in an unknown liquid, which protruded from both ends of the device. The paper towel appeared to have been lit but the device failed to function. UFA bomb squad technicians rendered safe the device. An investigation is ongoing.
