On 24 August 2017, Bahraini authorities arrested seven people associated with a terrorist cell whose leadership is believed to be in Iran. Authorities seized 127 kg (280 lbs) of explosives, which included 24kg (53 lbs) of C-4 and TATP. Weapons and ammunition, along with grenades and electric initiators, were also discovered at several residential addresses in four separate villages.

On 25 August 2017, media sources reported that authorities arrested five suspects in Bandung, West Java, in connection with a dirty bomb plot. Sources suggested that the suspects were using an Indonesian-language bomb instruction manual in an attempt to convert Thorium 232 into Uranium 233 for use in an improvised nuclear device, possibly a dirty bomb involving a mixture of Thorium and TATP. Analysts suggested that the suspects did not have the equipment or knowledge required to create a viable device and claimed the militants would likely have killed themselves in the process of manufacturing a dirty bomb.

On 21 August 2017 at 2342 local time, officers from the North Newton Police Department (NNPD) discovered explosives in a vehicle during a routine traffic stop in North Newton. Two cylindrical objects were discovered during the vehicle search, which prompted the NNPD officers to request assistance from the Wichita Bomb Squad (WBS). Bomb technicians rendered safe both devices before the evidence was turned over to the ATF. The two devices were described as containing multiple components and that explosives were present. The suspect was arrested charges are pending for criminal possession of explosives.

On 23 August 2017 at approximately 1600 local time, officers from the Redding Police Department (RPD) discovered possible explosive devices, while serving a search warrant in Redding. The area was evacuated as the Shasta County bomb squad awaited support from Sacramento. Samples of the suspect material were seized for analysis with the aid of Butte County agencies. An investigation is ongoing and no further information was released.

On 22 August 2017 at 1554 local time, a suspect described as wearing a purple dress with an ivory head covering robbed a local bank in Ferguson Township. The suspect placed a device on the counter of the bank, and indicated that he was armed and that the device was a bomb. The suspect fled the scene after receiving an unspecified amount of money. Multiple bomb threats were called in to a retail store and a university the same day as the robbery. Bomb technicians stated that hoax devices were discovered at both locations. On 23 August 2017 at approximately 1450 local time, a suicide bomber detonated an explosive vest, killing as many as six and wounding up to eight victims in the Muna area of Maidugari. Media sources reported conflicting casualty statistics. However, at least five of the wounded were police officers. As State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) staff arrived at the scene, a second individual attempted to grab a soldier’s rifle, but was shot and killed. While responding to a nearby vehicle crash, authorities arrested a 27-year-old suspect believed to be one of three individuals involved in the ATM bombing and robbery.

A suspect being held in connection to the recent Barcelona attack claimed the 12-man terrorist cell originally planned to bomb monuments around the city of Barcelona. One survivor of the house explosion that took place on 16 August 2017 in the town of Alcanar informed a court in Madrid that the plotters intended to target Spanish monuments with large, vehicle-borne improvised explosive devices and intended to blow themselves up in the attacks. One of the targets mentioned by the alleged plotter was the unfinished Sagrada Familia Roman Catholic church in Barcelona. Also, on 23 August 2017, investigators discovered a viable explosive belt in the ruble at the site of the house explosion in Alcanar. No further information pertaining to the explosive belt was released.

On 22 August 2017 at approximately 1445 local time, Pennsylvania State University Police (PSUP) responded to a possible hazardous device at the Research Building West, at University Park. PSUP K9 teams swept the building and discovered a small cylinder with protruding wires on the roof of the building. The Penn State-State College hazardous device team determined the device was a hoax. An investigation is ongoing.

On 20 August 2017 at approximately 0813 local time, the Summit County Sheriff’s Office (SCSO), along with the Unified Fire Authority’s (UFA) bomb squad, responded to a hazardous device in Park City. The device was described as a tube about five inches long and 2 inches in diameter. Two spray-paint can caps were connected by electrical tape to the cylinder. The device contained a paper towel, soaked in an unknown liquid, which protruded from both ends of the device. The paper towel appeared to have been lit but the device failed to function. UFA bomb squad technicians rendered safe the device. An investigation is ongoing.
