On 14 August 2017 at approximately 2030, Butte County Sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to a suspicious vehicle parked in front of a residence in Gridley, California. Deputies detained the occupant, and located drug paraphernalia and a loaded firearm. A pipe bomb was also discovered in the trunk when a K9 alerted the officers to the presence of explosives. Bomb squad technicians confirmed that it was a viable hazardous device and rendered it safe. An investigation is ongoing.

Family members then drove the materials to a parking lot outside City Hall South where bomb squad and HAZMAT personnel responded. Two items were rendered safe and the chemicals were removed. Additional articles were seized in a subsequent search of the suspect’s home, but no additional bomb making components were found.

On 13 August 2017 at approximately 1626 hours local time, members of the Youngstown Bomb Squad (YBS) arrived at a local residence in Winona, Minnesota, to investigate a suspect device placed in a mail box. Bomb squad technicians identified the device as a galvanized metal pipe between four and five inches long, and two-and-one-quarter inches in diameter, with both ends crimped and soldered closed. A hole was drilled into the pipe with a fuse inserted, which was previously lit, but failed to function. The device was rendered safe by the YBS technicians. An investigation is ongoing with no clear motive or suspect.

Undercover FBI agents provided the suspect with a cargo van, which the he believed was loaded with an explosive device composed of 1,000 pounds of an ammonium nitrate and fuel oil mixture with a cell phone initiator. The suspect previously expressed an interest in targeting a Federal Reserve Bank, but opted to target the local bank instead because he wanted to minimize casualties. The suspect is reportedly a follower of the Three-Percenter anti-government ideology and expressed an interest in joining a militia group. He was charged with attempting to use explosives to destroy a building in interstate commerce.

The cash from the machine was missing and the video camera from the ATM showed two male suspects fleeing in a vehicle. Along with the SDPD, members from the San Diego Fire Bomb Squad, ATF and FBI responded and began an investigation.
