On 26 May 2021, the Florence Police Department (FPD) and Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in Underwood-Petersville after receiving reports of a man attacking family members. According to authorities, the 34-year-old suspect threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, at the home where his parents and three children live, fired several shots at his parents, and then attacked his brother and children with a machete. No injuries were reported from the IID, but the suspect’s brother and children received lacerations from the machete. After barricading himself in a shed on the property, the suspect was apprehended by FPD SWAT personnel. The suspect was arrested and has been charged with six counts of attempted murder. The investigation is ongoing.

On 27 February 2019, a 45-year-old man was arrested for planning to blow up his mother with a victim-operated IED (VOIED) planted in a shed at their Jackson County home. The man’s mother called authorities concerned that he was on drugs, wouldn’t leave her house, and had stored a propane tank in the shed. When a Sheriff’s deputy and the mother entered the shed, the IED made with PVC pipe and gunpowder functioned, causing a small explosion. The propane tank was not turned on at the time of the explosion. The State of Alabama Bomb Squad responded and determined that it was a viable, and rendered safe the device. Also, drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine, and a hand gun were discovered on scene. Four suspects were arrested. However, only one faces charges of possession of a destructive device, while the rest face drug charges. The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) indicated they will seek federal charges against the male suspect associated to the pipe bomb.

On 26 February 2019, a 44-year-old male will be arraigned on Federal charges for detonating an IED in the work truck of another man in Dothan in October 2017. According to authorities, the suspect possessed two IEDs—one was described as a galvanized steel pipe that contained bullets, and a low explosive main charge. According to court documents. The other device was a directional focused fragmentation charge described as having a similar low explosives main charge mixed with irregular flattened ball smokeless powder in an aluminum tube with one open end contained a lead shot fragmentation. On 11 April 2018, deputies from the Henry County Sheriff’s Department (HCSD) responded to a call of a suspicious package at the Henry County Courthouse in Headland. According to authorities, the material inside the package was triacetone triperoxide (TATP) and could have detonated. An investigation led police to a 37-year-old suspect. A search of the suspect’s house revealed he was in possession of more TATP and other precursors associated with the synthesis of homemade explosives. The Dothan Police Department Bomb Squad was called to assist in the investigation and removal of the hazardous material. The perpetrator was arrested without incident.

On 24 January 2020, officers from the Ketchikan Police Department searched the Ketchikan residence of a convicted felon based on a report of an illegal handgun and discovered a small arsenal of bomb-making materials (BMM), partially constructed IEDs, firearms with thousands of rounds of ammunition, and drug paraphernalia. Authorities recovered IED associated components that included 5 lb of suspected explosives; “empty grenades with fuses”; all-purpose cement; a bag filled with bolts, washers, and nails; a mortar and pestle; cardboard fuses; and PVC pipes. They additionally found explosive precursor chemicals, including potassium perchlorate, aluminum powder, 99.5 percent pure sulfur, copper oxide, and other unidentified chemicals. The suspect’s motive is unknown, but he was responsible for multiple violent postings on social media and was arrested in 2015 for threatening troopers with a hoax IED. The ATF is assisting local police with the ongoing investigation.
