On 26 May 2021, the Florence Police Department (FPD) and Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office responded to a residence in Underwood-Petersville after receiving reports of a man attacking family members. According to authorities, the 34-year-old suspect threw an improvised incendiary device (IID), described as a Molotov cocktail, at the home where his parents and three children live, fired several shots at his parents, and then attacked his brother and children with a machete. No injuries were reported from the IID, but the suspect’s brother and children received lacerations from the machete. After barricading himself in a shed on the property, the suspect was apprehended by FPD SWAT personnel. The suspect was arrested and has been charged with six counts of attempted murder. On 01 November 2018, media reported that deputies from Limestone County Sheriff’s Office (LCSO) found an improvised explosive device (IED) in a stolen vehicle on 21 October in Limestone County. The vehicle was abandoned in a pasture by a 25-year-old male suspect who was accused of firing shots at multiple deputies, while taking two women hostages, and setting fire to a home. No injuries were reported in the incident. According to LCSO spokesman, an unidentified device was found in the suspect’s vehicle and recently confirmed to be an IED. The suspect was charged with five counts of attempted murder, two counts of kidnapping, arson, theft, shooting into an occupied vehicle, criminal mischief, and possession of a homemade explosive device.

State bomb squad technicians responded to the scene and confirmed there was a substance inside the device and removed it from the area for further examination. The 46-year-old male driver was arrested and has been charged with possession of a destructive device.

The suspect answered the door with a firearm and claimed to possess explosives. The suspect eventually surrendered and Florence Police Department Explosive Devices Unit found two hoax improvised explosive devices (IEDs) inside the residence. CCSD deputies took the suspect into custody and charged him with two felony counts of possession of a hoax device.
