On 12 January 2021, at approximately 1400 hours local time, Calhoun County Sheriff’s Office deputies responded to an Ohatchee residence after a woman discovered a possible explosive device on her property. Deputies examined the device, described as a black cylindrical object with a plug and key on the end, and contacted Etowah County Sheriff’s Department bomb disposal technicians. The technicians examined the device and determined it was an old device. No further device details were provided. Federal authorities are assisting local authorities with the ongoing investigation.

On 11 July 2020, at approximately 0800 hours local time, officers from the Etowah County Drug Enforcement Unit and technicians from the Gadsden Police Department Bomb Squad responded to a residence where police discovered an apparent explosive device. The unspecified explosive device was rendered safe and removed from the scene. No further device details were provided. The suspects were charged with possession of a destructive device, and unlawful possession of a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia.

On 23 October 2017 at approximately 0700 hours local time, a device believed to be a pipe bomb detonated inside of a pickup truck operated by a man in Taylor. The explosion blew out the vehicle’s windows, which was described as a truck used for construction. The driver was injured and transported to a nearby medical center and he is expected to survive. Following the explosive incident, police searched another vehicle, which belonged to the male victim’s girlfriend; although there is no indication that she is a suspect. The Houston County Sheriff’s Office (HCSO), Taylor Police, Dothan Police Department (DPD), and the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF) are investigating the incident.

On 26 October 2017, Dothan Police Department (DPD) officers and agents from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) responded to a report of a bomb threat at an apartment complex in Dothan. While no device was discovered, authorities collected evidence at the apartment, which linked the resident to a 23 October 2017 radio-controlled improvised explosive device (RCIED) incident. That event, which was based on an RCIED detonation in a travelling vehicle, resulted in severe injuries to the driver. He was treated at a local hospital for shrapnel wounds to his back and was released. The suspect was taken into custody and charged with several crimes, which included attempted murder.

On 8 August 2017, officers from the Florala Police Department (FPD) discovered an explosive device inside of a home while responding to a domestic violence call in Florala. According to officials, the suspect gave consent to search the home and the FPD on scene requested support from the Dothan Police Bomb Squad. Bomb technicians removed one device and were searching for two others. They also found methamphetamine manufacturing materials. No further information was provided on the discovered device and the suspect was arrested without incident.

On 21 January 2019, a suicide bomber used a vehicle-borne IED (VBIED) to attack the National Directorate of Security (NDS) training center in Wardak province. Following the attack, two gunmen entered the campus and opened fire on Afghan soldiers before being killed. Afghan officials have reported more than 100 people dead, including eight commandos and more than 40 members of Afghanistan’s intelligence forces. According to eyewitnesses, all the attackers were dressed in NDS uniforms. A second VBIED was discovered and rendered safe. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Taliban attacks have increased in recent weeks during a period of renewed peace talks and upcoming presidential elections.

According to the provincial Afghan police, the explosive was concealed in a motorcycle parked near the rally and was initiated by a time switch in the device. Two security force members were among the dead, but the candidate was not at the rally at the time. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. This is the third attack against the election campaign events in Afghanistan in October 2018.
