On 27 January 2018 at approximately 1215 hours local time, a suicide bomber detonated a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) disguised as an ambulance in Kabul. The attack occurred in a heavily guarded portion of the city that includes European Union offices, a hospital, and a shopping area. According to an Afghanistan Ministry of Interior Affairs (AMIA) spokesperson, the VBIED passed through a security checkpoint under the guise of transporting a patient to a hospital. The AMIA spokesperson also stated that police identified the suicide bomber at a second checkpoint, but the attacker detonated the VBIED before police could neutralize the bomber. The detonation killed 103 people and wounded 235 more, according to the AMIA spokesperson. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack and asserted that the target was the AMIA.

On 14 January 2019, a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) detonated in the eastern part of Kabul, killing 4 people and wounding at least 113 others. According to witnesses and officials, the VBIED detonated in a roundabout prior to reaching its intended target. A Taliban spokesperson claimed responsibility for the attack and stated that they were targeting the Green Village compound where large numbers of foreigners live. The VBIED collapsed blast walls and damaged the Green Village compound. In addition, on 15 January 2019 at approximately 0820 hours local time, a driver was killed in Kabul when a magnetically attached IED functioned under his vehicle in Abdul Haq square. Reports indicate no individual or group has claimed responsibility for the attack.

On 7 August 2019 at approximately 0900 hours local time, a vehicle-borne IED (VBIED) detonated while being intercepted at a checkpoint outside a police station in western Kabul. The explosion killed 14 people, wounded at least 145 others, destroyed multiple vehicles, and destroyed most of the surrounding buildings. The majority of casualties were civilians. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack, which came a day after the group warned Afghans not to participate in the upcoming presidential election in September.

On 29 November 2020, at approximately 0800 hours local time, Afghan security forces responded after an unknown attacker accompanied by several gunmen detonated a vehicle-borne IED (VBIED) in front of a Public Protection Force base in the Ghazni province. The blast killed at least 30 Afghan soldiers and wounded 24 others. The base and surrounding buildings sustained significant damage. According to a local official, the attack began when several gunmen assaulted the front gate to clear a path for the vehicle to charge the entrance. According to a defense ministry statement the “Taliban mastermind” and seven other terrorists were killed in an airstrike in connection with the attack. The investigation is ongoing.

On 30 April 2021, at approximately 1900 hours local time, a vehicle-borne IED (VBIED) functioned near a guesthouse in Pul-e-Alam, Logar Province, killing at least 27 people and wounding at least 91. The explosion occurred during dinner as residents were breaking their Ramadan fast. According to the provincial council chief, the vehicle’s driver claimed to be with a nongovernmental organization and there to assist the locals. The explosion caused the guesthouse roof to collapse, trapping many people inside, including members of the security force. The explosion also caused widespread damage to a nearby hospital and houses. No details about the VBIED were provided. No one claimed responsibility for the incident, but a spokesperson of the Interior Ministry blamed the Taliban for the attack. The investigation is ongoing.
