On 18 May 2020 at approximately 0500 hours local time, a vehicle-borne IED (VBIED) utilizing a stolen Humvee detonated inside the main compound of a base used by Afghanistan’s National Directorate of Security in Ghazni. The explosion killed 9 people, injured at least 40, and caused severe damage to the base and surrounding building, with windows shattering more than a mile away. According to authorities, most of the casualties were intelligence and security personnel. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack on social media, saying it was retaliation for the military recently resuming operations against the group.

On 8 May 2019 at approximately 1150 hours local time, Taliban insurgents attacked the Kabul offices of a U.S. aid group with a vehicle-borne IED (VBIED), rocket-propelled grenades, and suicide person-borne IEDs (PBIEDs). The attack began with the suicide VBIED at the entrance to the group’s Afghanistan headquarters, after which assailants equipped with rocket-propelled grenades and suicide PBIEDs entered the building. Small explosions were reported during the subsequent fighting between the attackers and Special Forces, which lasted several hours. According to government sources, 15 people were injured. A Taliban spokesman claimed responsibility for the attack, which occurred during the sixth round of peace talks in Qatar between the Taliban and the United States.

After the VBIEDs functioned, attackers engaged security forces in a gun battle lasting approximately 30 minutes. There are conflicting reports regarding the number of casualties; however, most sources are confirming 2 dead and at least 70 injured. No U.S. or coalition forces were wounded in the attack. In addition to the medical facility, a number of civilian houses were destroyed in the attack. U.S. forces conducted airstrikes on the medical facility after the remaining attackers barricaded themselves inside. The Taliban claimed responsibility for the attack. Base representatives stated that the fighting was contained to the medical facility and the base was not in danger, adding that at no time during the attack was the base’s perimeter breached or compromised.

The Kabul Police Chief stated that a vehicle-borne improvised explosive device (VBIED) also detonated an hour later in the city. Sources stated that the second attack killed members of the police and civilians, including journalists, who rushed to the scene of the first explosion. The explosions killed at least 26 people and injured 91 others. The Islamic State of Iraq and ash-Sham Khorasan Province (ISIS-KP) claimed responsibility for the attack.
