TRIPwire, 4 November 2020
On 1 November 2020, an explosive attack in Kunduz province, believed to be carried out by a Taliban-operated missile or an unmanned aircraft system (UAS), killed at least four security officers and injured eight others at the governor’s compound. It was unclear if the attack included a missile, an IED incorporated into a UAS, or an explosive device launched or dropped by a UAS. There have been other instances of suspected Taliban use of UASs to drop munitions, including in May 2020, when one person was killed in an explosive device attack on the same governor’s compound. Officials in Kunduz have allegedly seen small Taliban UASs conducting surveillance. The use of UASs to launch explosive devices would represent a new tactic for Taliban operations.
