On 12 August 2020, at approximately 1900 hours local time, officers from the Boynton Beach Police Department responded to reports of an explosion along a road next to an apartment building. Officers discovered multiple IEDs described as pipe bombs and the remnants of a functioned device, then called in the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office Bomb Squad to assist. Bomb squad technicians located six IEDs and determined they consisted of PVC pipe capped on both ends and a fuse. Each device contained black powder, and some contained metal nails, screws, and pellets for a fragmentation enhancement. While securing the area, authorities discovered a cardboard box on a dumpster adjacent to the apartment building. The box contained additional IEDs and bomb-making materials (BMM), including multiple bottles of black powder and magnesium. In total, police and the bomb squad recovered 26 explosive devices, all of which were rendered safe. An area resident notified police of a potential suspect known to construct and detonate explosive devices. Police located and arrested the 34-year-old male suspect in the apartment building near where the devices were discovered. The suspect told police he had been constructing devices for multiple years and acquired materials online. He claimed the devices were intended for the 4th of July and removing tree stumps. After seeing the police presence in the area, the suspect had dumped the cardboard box containing BMM and devices in the dumpster. The suspect has been charged with 26 counts of making, possessing, placing, or discharging a destructive device.
